Industry and job function filters

Learn what LinkedIn industry and job-function fields represent, how they are inferred, and when they can create misleading exclusions.

LinkedIn explains that a profile industry is selected by the member and may describe the member or the company. In Recruiter, job function can be inferred from the titles on a profile. These fields are structured signals, not verified statements of every skill or responsibility.

Use industry and function to reduce noise, then validate the actual title, employer, scope, and skills. Avoid excluding an adjacent industry too early when the required experience is transferable.

Practical checklist

  • Use industry as a relevance signal, not proof of expertise.
  • Check the title and responsibilities behind an inferred function.
  • Include adjacent industries when skills are transferable.
  • Review excluded profiles before making a filter permanent.
